Don Van Vliet January 15, 1941 – December 17, 2010
One of the true music purveyors of the 20th Century, has been lost.
Don Van Vliet ( a.k.a Captain Beefheart) was a true inspiration for me, pushing boundaries completely in music's possibilities. With Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, there debut 'Safe As Milk' blended Jazz, blues, rock, psychedelia and anything else you can think of. however in 1969 made one of the best and unique albums ever; 'Trout Mask Replica'.
He will be sorely missed as much as his work with Frank Zappa, his own but also missed as a pioneer in contemporary music.
Rest In peace.

For Your Consideration-2010
I've already done my Top Ten Albums Of 2010, however, here are a few others that you should quickly become familiar with, very soon.
Richard Skelton-Landings
- I've only recently discovered this wonderful human being/musician, yet love him to bits. Haunting and beautiful. I don't care what sort of music you like, you'd be a fool not to like this. (This album is arguably 2009, depending on where you live, mind.)

The Jim Jones Revue-Burning Your House Down
I saw them play Dishonest John on Later Live With Jools Holland and was immediatly hooked, I went out and bought the record the next day; I thoroughly reccommemd that you do the same. Modern day The Faces in a blender with The Ramones and Elvis Presely. If 10 was a higher number then it would be in the previous post ( well actualy every album listed here should be in that list ).

Joe Bonamassa-Black Rock
-Read the review, scroll back a few pages.

Black Country Communion-Black Country Communion
-Not the best album, but a very good one at that. If you like your heavy rock, then this should be up for your consideration, if only for the amazing voice from Glenn Hughes.

Dweezil Zappa-Return Of The Son Of
-A seriously mind-boggling live album, that bears witness to some of the best musicianship, you've ever seen in your life. Playing a great collection from Frank's illustrious back catalogue, including the hilarious and genius "Billy The Mountain".

How To Swim- Retina (Or More Fun Than A Vat Of Love)
- Nine piece orchestral alternative band that sounds like The Clash's lighter moments with a bit of Pavement? If you think of this you probably aren't even close. Very nice to listen to.

Gonjasufi - A Sufi And A Killer
-Like nothing that you've heard before, I don't even have the album, yet have heard enough of it to say it is amazing. It should really be in the top ten. Funk?Pysch?Hip-Hop? Whatever I say, it can't be justified.

Big Boi Vs The Black Keys- The Brothers Of Chico Dusty
- A really fun - free listen, this costs nothing to listen to and you won't regret it.
Two great artists making a truly fantastic sound. A mash-up at its best!

RE-RELEASES OF 2010!
Iggy and The Stooges-Raw Power
-A true classic and anyone who doesn't believe that Raw Power isn't one of the greatest albums should go slap themselves around the face with a wet fish. Enough said.

The Rolling Stones-Exile On Main Street
-Do I really have to explain this one?

Paul McCartney And Wings-Band On The Run
-Truly fantastic. You cannot help but adore/admire this album. I heard it for the first time when my mother picked it up on Vinyl from Oxfam, and it is automatically one of my favourite ever albums!

David Bowie-Station To Station
-It's Bowie, so what to do you expect? Of course it's gonna' be great!

I KNOW YOU DON'T CARE, BUT I DO
Emerica-Stay Gold
-See review, flick back a page.

Blueprint-Make Friends With The Colour Blue.
-With an astounding soundtrack that sounds like a mixtake, it is very reminiscent of an old Zoo York Video. This video shows British (mostly) skateboarding at its finest. A true essential for your video collection.

Sidewalk Magazine-The Big push 2010
-Having taken the job from Document when they folded a couple of years ago, they never cease to impress. I-path won it this year and very well deserved (they got my vote).

Element Europe-Get Busy Living
-Showcasing European skateboarding at its best, great soundtrack coupled with amazing skateboarding, making the U.S big dogs step up their game. America, watch out!

Andy Evans-Heel Toe Magic
-This may be 2009, but never the less this is genius. It will have you laughing start to finish as Marc Churchill learns the history of skateboarding. You have to purchase this British gem, but whatever you do, don't open the freestyle room!

Habitat- Origin
-I have yet to purchase this, yet watched a bit of it in the Slam City Skates store in London. It looks great, the filming is very crispy and my few minutes of witnessing it, so does the skating.

Krooked- Krook3D
-I just watched all of this today and it's purely bangin'! Both in 3D and in 2D. The first skateboarding video in 3D and not only is the technology(?) off the charts, so is the skating. A pure must!

Slave-Radio Television
-The first video from Slave, and a contender for skate video of the year as it is very very very good. Every style of skating covered in this video. The editing is really superb! Why? Watch it you'll be surprised.

Gravis-Dylan Reider
-He's been my favourite (one of many) skaters for a while and this video proves my point. You will be shocked and be in awe guaranteed at the level of skating here. Amazing!

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY!
Rush-Beyond The Lighted Stage
-Very, very interesting stuff here, having watched it multiple, multiple times I can firmly say if you love Rush, you'll love this!

Dr.Feelgood-Oil City Confidential
-A very unique take on the Essex band, this is very flush indeed. Love them or hate them, you must be dead inside to not appreciate the film making skills here.

It Might Get Loud
-Jack White+The Edge+Jimmy Page+A big room+plenty of Guitar porn= A great watch!

Thank You For Letting Me Ramble In 2010. You've Been Golden.

Sam Hughes's Top Ten Albums Of 2010
In No Particular Order.
The Black Keys-Brothers
-The latest offering from the sleazy blues duo from Ohio gives fans a new chapter to read in The Black Keys Catalogue. With Bass and Keyboard/Organ added to this album, it gives it a more commercial feel, yet still remaining true to its roots.

Arcade Fire-The Suburbs
-The third album from a band who I see to be one of the few pushing boundaries in modern music, clever, powerful and strong lyrics along with amazing music make Winn Butler and Co one of the best bands of the last decade.

The Dead Weather-Sea Of Cowards
-Very few albums actually seem like albums currently, however this most certainly does. With a big dose of synth along with guitar, bass and drums and of course Alision Mosshart, you'd be a fool if you wanted more. A truly original album.

Aloe Blacc-Good Things
-True 1970s soul for the 21st century. A wonderful album, offering songs for every and any mood. A near faultless album.

The Drums-The Drums
-Ignore the hipster hype, as if you really listen there are some great tracks to this album. If the The Smiths were still together today.....and Echo and The Bunnymen were willing to get together, you're almost there.

Grinderman-Grinderman 2
-Nick Cave here, with another truly, truly fantastic piece of work. Not many albums do you have to listen to one track to prove that it is an album of the year. MC5 and The Stooges for the 21st century. What more could you ask for? (Ice Cream)

Eric Clapton-Clapton
-Mr. Clapton hasn't really been in his prime since the days of John Mayall and Cream. Although, this album has a great feel from start to finish, playing anything other than a Stratocaster for once, has broadened ( I believe ) his fans' horizons. Well done Eric, you're getting there again.

Robert Plant Band Of Joy- Band Of Joy
-An album with great variety. Plant has a great array of diverse and very talented musicians to create a truly great and full album. Hopefully after this album, people won't be talking about that little band that he was in, but the band that he is in now.

Liars-Sisterworld
-From my first listen of the New York band; I knew I was onto something different and very special.Beautiful and charming music on their latest album. If you aren't familiar with them, get acquainted. Prepare for the unexpected mind.

Forest Swords-Dagger Paths
Wow, how to describe this one. Psychedelic elctronica? The Velvet Underground's modern day interpreters but with drone? Most certainly a difficult one. I highly recommend checking them out, you will not regret it.

Fashion?
Dictionary.com defines Fashion as a prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing etc.: the latest fashion in dresses.
I somewhat disagree with that.
If we as human beings look back over time, we see people conforming to others, wearing what is popular- going through the current 'trend'. This ladies and gentleman sounds like a bad thing,no?
The media plagues us with information about how our models are both too skinny and not healthy, yet these 'models' still manage to sell clothes for the companies they are modelling for and supposedly get both male and female attention (wink wink, nudge, nudge say no more). Because of the previous reasons I vowed never to take an active role in a lifestyle where people are judged by what they wear. Therefore, I promised to myself that I will never, ever, ever take part in a Fashion Show!!!!!!!!!!
Then I was asked to take part in one.....

I'm Sorry.

Things I Hate About Myself....
-My stupidy
-My seemingly inability to do anything normal.
-How I can't ever be mellow, I'm either too down or too high.
-How I often say the word 'poo'
-How my facial hair grows in a very odd way.
-My body
-How I don't have the X Factor.
-How I can't be cool.
-How I have to be into bands that I can't talk to anyone about as they don't know them.
-My hair (some days)
-How I'll never become a Princess.
-For someone who plays bass, my hands are relatively small.
-I can't pull off saying the word 'mate'
-How my taxidermist career will never take off.
-People assume just because I can be academic, that thus excludes me from undertaking perhaps not so academic activities.
-That I don't have the energy to go up to London and give Cameron a good ol' whack on the head.
-How when I talk to the female kind, I always end up talking about how the majority of boys don't wash their hands or facial hair problems.
-If I think a man is rather attractive, I seem homosexual.
-When I talk to the dead they give me no advice on how to become the next Apprentice.
-My face.
-How I often get into a routine, yet hate them so.
-Carol Vorderman wont return my calls or my letters, faxes and gives no comments on my photographs/drawings/dreams.
...
Obviously not all of these are true, but their are a few things I don't like about myself.
...
But it doesn't matter in the end as I am better than every single one of you!
