Welcome to my first review of an album so bear with me. Today I will be reviewing the latest offering by Mr.Bonamassa and his 21st century style blues. I will review this album track by track, however I wont always to do it this way. So sit back and relax as I press play...
Steal Your Heart Away:
A great and fresh cover of the Bobby Parker song. The song reminds me of The Ballad Of John Henry Album. This track really sets the tone of the album. One can't help but admire Carmine Rojas's bass playing in this song. A fab way to kick off his album. Joe also delivers his trademark guitar playing that we all know and love.
I Know A Place:
Another cover and this time by John Hiatt. You will notice that this album is very cover heavy. It is worth mentioning that those who haven't heard Joe's latest album is that it feels very produced and perhaps not as raw as his earlier albums like Blues Deluxe or A New Day Yesterday, however this is not nessesiarly a bad think. I Know A Place features some very funky bass and symbals oriented Drums with of course a excellent solo from Bonamassive!
When The Fire Hits The Sea:
The first orginal song of Black Rock, inspired by Joe's time in Greece (where it was recorded). Although Joe being American this song is very much a British sounding song. The producer Kevin Shirley has done a fantastic job producing this track. The guitar playing is like an electric Robert Johnson however also like Eric Claptons work with Cream & Blind Faith.
Quarryman's Lament:
A very beautiful song which is obvilously inspired by Joe's time in Greece. Several Greek Muscians add to this song playing more obscure instruments if you will that you'd expect on a Bonamassa album. This track changes the pace of the album and makes the album itself more varied and colourful.
Spanish Boots:
Possibly my favourite track from the album. As you probably know this song is orginally by Jeff Beck, an artist which Joe has covered songs before i.e Blues Deluxe. This song most of all features first clase guitar playing and well, what would you expect from a song by Sir Beck? Dynamicly and musically and overall a great song with alot of power and feeling. Oh how I can't wait till he peforms this live!
Bird On A Wire:
A song orginally by Leonard Cohen and really quite ambitious to cover. It is clear that Joe's voice is great here and the acoustic playing is admirable. A song that beautifully builds as the song progresses. Yet again changing the pace of the album.
Three Times A Fool:
Getting back to the blues baby! A great and simple 12 bar cover of the Otis Rush song. The guitar playing is not suprisingly at a very high level. No wonder Joe's so pleased with it!
Night Life:
Rolling with the King on this one. BB King himself gives us his signature guitar playing and that fantastic blues voice that we all love. Throw in Joe voice and playing to the mix and it's recipe for a great fun song. What a treat for blues fans world wide. Balanced by Joe's fantastic Rhythm section aswell as Rick Melick on keyboards and David Woodford on sax! What a treat!
Wandering Earth:
A biographical song about the rhythm and blues singer Johhny Ace. A very sad song as Mr.Ace killed himself in 1955 whilst playing a game of Russian Roulette. Probably the stand out instrument on this track apart from the guitar is the beautif keyboard work from Rick Melick!
Look Over Yonders Wall:
Just when you thought one king was good, we now have two. Although he doesn't play on this track this Albert King orginal is sure to tickle the fancy of any guitar player. A very bluesy song and Joe's guitar reminds me not just of Albert King but also Walter Trout who Joe collaberated with on Full Cirlce on the 10/10 track Clouds On THe Horizon. This album certainly gets better as it goes along!
Athens To Athens:
You guessed it, another song about Joes time in Greece. Along with the Greek contributors and Joe playing of that Yamaha Acoustic, this song reminds me of the Sloe Gin album. A very orginal song at the least.
Blue And Evil:
A Joe orginal which I suppose can be realted to the Physical Graffiti Era of the great Led Zeppelin. On the other hand this particually drak album reminds me of The Ballad Of John Henry album once again. One of my favourite songs of the album a wonderful and powerful song. Did I mention that I have the Limited Deluxe Edition of the album? No? Well I do! ...... Bite Me!
Baby You Gotta Change Your Mind:
A wonderful way to finish the album. A fantastic cover of Blind Boy Fuller song. As Joe admitts it's quite easy to spot that the band are a bit intoxicated on this track!
Overall rating: 8/10
Next time: Slash Rock 'F' Roll
